Power Animals
Power Animals
Every animal carries a particular energy β and when one crosses your path, lingers, or comes to your very door, it is rarely an accident. It is a message. Here is how to listen.
When an animal comes to visit you, pay attention.
A deer who steps quietly up to your door may have come to remind you to be gentle with yourself. A hawk circling overhead may be carrying a message youβve been too busy to receive. The creatures who appear in our lives β in waking life, in dreams, again and again β are speaking the oldest language there is. Once you learn to notice them, you are never without guidance.
If youβd like to go deeper, a wonderful companion guide is Ted Andrewsβ classic Animal Speak β but your own intuition, and the feeling an animal stirs in you, will always be your truest teacher.
Moose
The moose is my own totem, and she carries a teaching I return to again and again. Look at her β enormous, top-heavy, balanced on impossibly spindly legs, as though she could never hold her own weight, let alone move with any speed. And yet the moose is astonishingly quick, sure-footed, and fierce when she needs to be. I know this first-hand: a moose once came right up to my own front door and lay down in the snow, utterly calm and at ease β just before one of the most challenging seasons of my life arrived. She had come, I believe, to tell me ahead of time that I was equal to it. When Moose comes to you, she is saying: you have the strength to endure what is coming. You are far stronger than you appear, even to yourself. The difficulty ahead will not topple you β you were built to carry it.
